Nuno Carinhas once again returns to the work of Gil Vicente, through one of the less performed autos written by this author who so well knew how to mirror human nature in his writings. Alma gives us a small theatre of life, staging it as a journey, with its achievements and its setbacks, obstacles and detours.
With a dramaturgy that is also an excursion through seldom frequented destinies of Portuguese literature -Vitorino Nemésio, Guerra Junqueiro, Teixeira de Pascoaes-, Alma is a visually intense piece riddled with pictorial reminiscences, trailing a path from sacred ritual to profane feast. At the epicentre, in a tug of war between Angel and Devil, a singular Gil Vicente character "the wandering Soul", allegory to the entire human species, fights against time and walks a path of ordeal, change and discovery.
