ARTISTIC RESIDENCIES PROGRAMME Teatro Viriato´s Artistic Residencies Programme, started in January 2023, is an initiative that aims to meaningfully contribute to the development of both national and international creators, by providing the space, financial support and other artistic requirements needed for the production and promotion of the performing arts. Throughout its existence, artist support has been one of the principal cornerstones of Teatro Viriato, and this programme, in close collaboration with all creators, will carry that precept to new heights.
DANCE // JANUARY 8th to 11th NYMPHALIS ANTIOPA by PAPILLONS D’ÉTERNITÉ (TÂNIA CARVALHO & MATTHIEU EHRLACHER)
“Nymphalis Antiopa” is a contemporary dance piece that unveils the creative complicity between two artists, exploring a dialogue of contrast and interaction. This choreographic show, highlighting the use of dance as a universal language, brings us two interlocked bodies, constantly challenging their balance and fluidity, exploring the frontier between movement and immobility.
Taking place in a utopian reality, unmarred by gender prejudices and social expectations, the protagonists look into each other's eyes, dancing with intimate and inalienable synchronicity. An emotional journey – accompanied by original music written exclusively for the choreography – that utilizes the intensity of sound to both multiply and amplify gestures and movement, while toying with the scales of perception and vibration, attempting to create a rich and multi-layered sensory experience.

“Popular”, a play by Sara Inês Gigante, winner of the Bolsa Amélia Rey Colaço (6th edition), will take to Teatro Viriato's stage on June 14th. With that in mind, the author will endeavour, for about a fortnight, to hone the concepts of “popular”, “pop”, “popularity” and “populism” that guide her show, at Teatro Viriato's studio. This project intends to investigate the part women played during Portugal's Colonial War, namely through the examination of aerogrammes created by the Movimento Nacional Feminino (Women's National Movement), which were exchanged between them and the soldiers who were fighting overseas. In addition to poring over these anonymous writings, it's equally important to find and hear whichever memories these women are willing to share. From those encounters, a critical-affective reading of Portugal's recent past will surely emerge.
Theatre and Music // APRIL 8th to 13th QUERO UM PIANO by ANA MADUREIRA and VAHAN KEROVPYAN
In this story, inspired by the Armenian Genocide of 1915, the artists throw the protagonist into a scenario taking place in outer space. Earth decided that there was no room for him. Did he arrive in the same heaven as the deceased? At the very least, he reached the empty space of a new land and a new life. “QUERO um PIANO” will be a solo performance for children/families, marked by music and humour. At Teatro Viriato, the artists will develop the research needed for the creation of the show.

DANCE // JULY 15th to 19th ANDAR PARA TRÁS by SARA ANJO
