Is beauty a mere distraction from what really matters? Can ugliness lead us to the real perception of sublime? These are some questions raised by Sonia Baptista in her new creation, "WOW", which covers concepts such as beauty, ugliness, and the sublime, but also disgust and repugnance.
In ancient Greece, beauty and good were considered inseparable concepts. The contemplation of beauty was supposed not only to provoke wonder and delight, but also to get the spectator closer to a wish for justice, eager forloftier ideals. But, over the time, the cult for beauty has also had its detractors. More than beauty, ugliness is what leads us to transcend the appearance of matter, and which opens our mind to the true and haunting perception of the sublime. As if a transcendent shock, a creation of the mind in which the horror and the pleasure become enmeshed, indistinguishable.
When all is said and done, we proffer our opinion and our grace, because to others our disgrace is naught but beautiful.
Who loves the ugly one...
